Former Student Acquires Campbell’s College as Owners Retire After 35 Years
Governance consultant steps in to prevent closure of institution that trained her and hundreds of professionals internationally
10 February 2026 — Beyond Governance has acquired Campbell’s College, the governance education institution where it’s CEO Erika Eliasson-Norris trained, preventing its closure as the founding team retires after 35 years.
Campbell’s College, established in 1991, has trained governance professionals across multiple continents with a reputation for practitioner-led teaching that prioritises real-world application. The college faced planned permanent closure following the owners’ retirement.
“Campbell’s shaped how I think about governance,” said Eliasson-Norris, a Chartered Governance Professional who leads the multi-award-winning consultancy Beyond Governance. “When I learned it would close, the decision was straightforward. This institution produces governance professionals who can actually do the work, not just pass exams. That’s rare enough to be worth preserving.”
Eliasson-Norris learned of the pending closure during a free revision event she ran for Chartered Governance Institute UK and Ireland students preparing for their upcoming exams. “Students mentioned the college was closing after their exams finished. I immediately contacted the founders,” she said. “When I reviewed their archives, 35 years of teaching notes, case studies, materials developed by practitioners who’d lived through actual governance failures, the depth of institutional knowledge was significant. Letting it disappear made no commercial or professional sense.”
The acquisition addresses a gap in governance education at a critical transition point for the profession. Governance roles are shifting from administrative support to strategic advisory functions, requiring more sophisticated training than many programmes currently provide.
“Campbell’s understood something fundamental: governance can’t be taught effectively by people who’ve only studied it academically,” Eliasson-Norris said. “You need tutors who’ve sat in boardrooms under pressure, who’ve navigated crises, who know what the work actually demands. That’s what Campbell’s delivered for 35 years.”
Beyond Governance provides governance consulting, board training, and strategic advisory services to organisations from startups to FTSE companies across UK, US and international markets. Eliasson-Norris is author of “The Secret Diary of a Company Secretary“, podcast host of “Grit in the Boardroom” and regular conference speaker on governance matters.
Under the acquisition, Campbell’s retains what has always defined it: student-first, practitioner-led teaching. Beyond Governance will strengthen this foundation with additional resources and teaching support that reinforce Campbell’s core approach.
New tutors and expanded programme details will be announced in coming months. The acquisition becomes effective 1 July 2026 ahead of November 2026 examinations. Campbell’s continues distance learning services under current leadership through end of June 2026.
Jane Hamilton and Vivien Campbell, owners of Campbell’s College, said: “We are delighted that the College will continue under Beyond Governance rather than closing when we retire, and we are confident that the Campbell’s College ethos of practical, practitioner-led teaching will be carried forward into the future.”
Vivien Campbell, further adds: “Alan Campbell, Jane Hamilton and I worked together for many years and were very like-minded in our approach. We always put our students first.
Jane and I were both working full-time while studying by distance learning and raising young families, and Alan was a single parent bringing up young sons. We understood first-hand what it takes to balance work, study and family life, and we built Campbell’s College around making that journey as supportive and achievable as possible.
It has been a great pleasure to see so many of our past students qualify and go on to successful careers with our help.
When Jane and I took over Campbell’s College, we expected that the College would one day close when we retired. We could not imagine anyone else carrying forward the same ethos and commitment to students.
That changed when we met Erika and Beyond Governance. After several conversations, Jane and I felt completely confident handing over the reins to an organisation whose values and approach are so closely aligned with our own. Alan would have been very happy with this outcome.”
