…battling inequality of opportunity for girls to realise their full potential…
Corporate Governance solution providers, Beyond Governance, announces its partnership with charity, The Girls’ Network.
Established in the UK in 2013, The Girls’ Network believes that no girl should have their futures limited by their gender, ethnicity, background or parental income. At 16, 50 per cent of the poorest girls have no GCSEs above grade D (3 in ‘new money’) and only 16 per cent of girls aged between 11 and 21 reported feeling happy¹.
They offer one-to-one mentoring schemes for girls in developing conversations and personal relationships with the professional community providing greater access to opportunities and skills to thrive. It operates nationwide and works with more than 1,000 girls a year aged between 14 and 19 directly through the secondary school sector.
Erika Percival, Founder and CEO of Beyond Governance said: “After publicly sharing my story on my personal battle in establishing my career against the odds, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It made me realise that Beyond Governance could have a positive impact on girls to support them in finding out what their future could offer them despite their background”.
She continues: “This partnership provides us with a frontline opportunity to support girls with the right guidance and practical tools to ensure that they have a positive mindset and access to people who can encourage their unlimited future. It’s daunting enough to work out what you want to do with your life, let alone if you come from an environment where you can’t see what’s possible.”
Charly Young, CEO of The Girls’ Network, adds: “We are thrilled to be working with Beyond Governance in providing one-to-one support and mentoring to girls and young women who need it most. Those from the least-advantaged communities face a double-disadvantage – that brought about by gendered expectations, and from not having access to the knowledge and networks that will allow them to pursue their dreams.”
She continues: “Of those girls who have had a mentor through The Girls’ Network, 93 per cent have grown in confidence, and 96 per cent feel more positive about their futures. It’s only by partnering with businesses that we can bring about these changes at the scale that is needed.”
