Coaching for Governance Professionals and Governance Teams

One-to-one and team coaching delivered by our qualified coach. Built for the moments that define governance careers and the dynamics that define governance teams.

Governance careers are made and broken in moments that no qualification covers.

What We Cover

The first ninety days of a new role. The board meeting where the chair tested you in front of everyone. The transition from Deputy to Group Company Secretary. The conversation with a director whose conflict of interest is the unspoken thing in the room. These are the situations where governance professionals are formed, and the situations where coaching makes the most difference. And occasionally, the situation calls for something deeper than coaching alone.

Our Coaching

Individual Mentoring

One-to-one mentoring for governance professionals at every stage.

Particular depth on:

– The move from Deputy to Group Company Secretary, where the role changes shape from execution to judgement and the readiness must be demonstrated long before the role becomes available.

– The first ninety days of a new role, where the impressions formed in those weeks will shape the relationship with the chair and the board for years.

– Navigating board pressure, including the moments where the governance professional is asked to do something they should not, or asked to fail to do something they should.

Career-defining moments that do not appear on any syllabus: the difficult conversation, the political situation, the regulatory exposure, the decision that will be looked at in hindsight.

For governance teams looking to lift performance as a unit.

Works on the dynamics, role clarity, and decision-making patterns that determine whether the team operates well in service of the board.

Useful when: A new head of governance is bedding in and wants the team to develop a shared way of working. The team has grown quickly and is now larger than the informal coordination that worked at smaller scale.

A recent board effectiveness review or internal audit has flagged dynamics in the governance function that need attention. The team is preparing for a significant moment (IPO, transaction, regulatory cycle) and needs to be operating cohesively.

For governance professionals and senior leaders where the challenge runs deeper than professional development or team dynamics. Sometimes capable, experienced leaders find that a gap persists between what they intend and what they consistently achieve.

Not for lack of skill or commitment, but because an underlying pattern is getting in the way. This is where conventional coaching reaches its limits. Through our partnership with Pattern Theory, we can refer clients to a specialist service that integrates EMCC-accredited executive coaching with UKCP-accredited psychotherapy.

The result is a more fundamental intervention, one that works directly on the patterns blocking performance rather than just the behaviours on the surface. This service is particularly relevant for senior governance professionals, chairs, and board level leaders who are ready to go deeper. Pattern Theory is an independent practice. Beyond Governance makes referrals where we believe this level of work is the right fit.

How it works

Who delivers

Coaching is delivered by our qualified coach, who is also a senior practitioner. Combines the formal discipline of trained coaching practice with the lived experience of having held senior governance roles.

Confidentiality

Coaching conversations are confidential by default. Where coaching is commissioned by a third party (a chair commissioning for a company secretary, a head of governance commissioning for a Deputy), the contracting includes a clear agreement on what is shared and what is not.
